Palestina-middag

Een wel heel speciaal FlexPodium: een complete zaterdagmiddag met Palestina als thema.

Te gast zijn Umayya Abu-Hanna en Mary Ann Jaraisy, twee van oorsprong Palestijnse Amsterdammers.

Onlangs publiceerden ze samen met culinair ondernemer Anouk Jansen het boek Een Palestijns diner. Een geschiedenis in verhalen en gerechten (uitg. Ambo/Anthos). Zie https://www.amboanthos.nl/boek/een-palestijns-diner/

Zaterdagmiddag 16 mei: daags na 15 mei, de internationale zogeheten Nakba-dag. Zie meer over de Nakba – Arabisch voor ‘ramp’, de etnische zuivering onder de Palestijnse bevolking tussen circa 1947 en 1949 – op o.a. https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nakba.

Het programma van dit FlexPodium:

• een laagdrempelige lezing van Umayya Abu-Hanna over Een Palestijns diner, Palestina en zijn geschiedenis en cultuur, met veel beeldmateriaal
  
  
• vertoning van de aangrijpende Palestijnse korte film Don't be long, little bird (regie: Reem Jubran, 2025).* Met o.a. een debutantenrol voor Banna Bazzarie en ook met de Palestijnse filmsterren Muna Basha en Clara Khoury. De trailer is te vinden op https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI0XluvQhY8

• het Hummus Museum: een kleine expositie over de geschiedenis van het beroemde lokale gerecht hummus- een markt met onder andere mooie oude en nieuwe Palestijnse sjaals, gepresenteerd door Mary Ann Jaraisy
  
  
• koffie en thee met verse koekjes, gemaakt door Palestijnse vluchtelingen

*Synopsis: de in Amerika geboren tiener Rima the Lost One (Banna Bazzarie) maakt een tijdreis naar het Palestina van de jaren dertig en van haar overgrootmoeder die ook Rima heette (Muna Basha). Na een aanvaring met haar moeder, tijdens een vakantie, wordt Rima the Lost One via een teletijdportaal getransporteerd naar de tijd van haar voorouders. Rima moet haar weg zien te vinden in haar voorouderlijke thuisland, dat ze nooit heeft gekend. Wanhopig zoekt ze naar een manier om thuis te komen, oftewel naar het heden, waar ze oorspronkelijk vandaan wilde vluchten.

Umayya Abu-Hanna is een Palestijnse schrijver en journalist, geboren in Haifa. Ze woonde jarenlang in Finland, waar ze diverse boeken publiceerde. Sinds 2010 woont ze in Amsterdam.

Mary Ann Jaraisy is een Palestijnse kunstenaar en keramist uit Nazareth die tegenwoordig in Amsterdam woont en werkt.

 The programme for this FlexPodium:

 - an accessible lecture by Umayya Abu-Hanna about A Palestinian dinner, Palestine and its history and culture, with lots of visual material

 - screening of The Wanted 18 (2014, 75 minutes, Amer Shomali and Paul Cowan): a unique mix of documentary and stop-motion animation about a true story that took place in the Palestinian town of Beit Sahour during the First Intifada (1987-1993).
A number of residents want to start their own small dairy farm with 18 cows, so they don’t have to depend on Israeli milk. This doesn’t exactly go smoothly.

- The Hummus Museum: a small exhibition about the history of the famous local dish hummus

- A market featuring beautiful old and new Palestinian scarves, presented by Mary Ann Jaraisy

- Coffee and tea with fresh biscuits, made by Palestinian refugees.

Umayya Abu-Hanna is a Palestinian writer and journalist, born in Haifa. She lived in Finland for many years, where she published several books. She has been living in Amsterdam since 2010.

Mary Ann Jaraisy is a Palestinian artist and ceramist from Nazareth who now lives and works in Amsterdam.
