Elena Anosova, Out-of-the-way

29 September - 9 December 2018

Schilt Publishing & Gallery is pleased to announce Out-of-the-way , an exhibition by Russian photographer Elena Anosova. Elena Anosova's artistic practices concentrate on topics of borders and isolation. Out-of-the-way is one of them. It is a story about a settlement in the extreme north of Russia founded by her ancestors more than 300 years ago. An isolated settlement, where the special relationship with nature, centuries-old traditions and myths are the inherent part of everyday life. A place where the fictional fits is sometimes more important than reality. Anosova's ancestors were hunters who occupied part of Siberia. They have settled on the Nizhnyaya Tunguska River on land and founded with a name that roughly translates as "Island". Nowadays the population of the village is approximately one hundred adults and most of them are Anosova's distant relatives: those who are not brothers are related in a neighborly way. The life of this part of her family, her father's siblings and numerous cousins ??and nephews, has not changed for centuries. Modern civilization penetrates this remote land surrounded by pristine wilderness very slowly. The closest town is 300 km away, and the transport connection functions only in winter time. Local legends and traditions are still highly valued in the settlement.
